Excellencies!

Dear international guests!

Welcome here in Vienna at the 3^rd R20 Austrian World Summit.

It is my special privilege to welcome you, António Guterres, UN General Secretary, again at this important gathering.

We highly appreciate your continuous efforts to tackle the climate crisis and make this the year of ambition on climate action.

Apropos “action”: Welcome, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thanks for being back, as you promised.

You are a true leader by example. The way you use your limelight to draw attention to the climate catastrophe helps to raise the sense of urgency for this issue.

I think people do know enough about the climate crisis. All the information is already out there. It has been out there for a long time. And it was one of the main reasons for me to join politics and I can tell you, that was 25 years ago.

That’s why I can tell you from the bottom of my heart, that people do not only need to know, they need to really feel the urgency. In their guts. Of what is at stake.

And you help so much with that, Arnie. Thank you.

And today there is one more, very special Guest with us.

Dear Greta Thunberg, we are happy to have you here. And it is an honor to have you here. I thank you not only for dedicating your life to our common task of saving this planet. But I also thank you for the hope you have been inspiring in so many of us.

Although, dear Greta, you have stressed on many occasions, and I agree with you, it is not so much hope we need when it comes to combat the climate crisis.

It is action.

You took action with your Fridays for Future initiative. You were bravely facing and enduring mockery, even hate for doing what you have recognized to be the right thing.

And this is what we all have to do.

Let us put things into action. I will switch to German now.

Ja, wir brauchen Taten. Nur wenn wir beginnen das, was wir schon lange wissen, auch in die Tat umzusetzen, kann wieder Hoffnung entstehen.

Also, was wissen wir?

Wir wissen, dass das, was die Staatengemeinschaft bisher getan hat, um die Klimakrise zu bekämpfen, zu wenig ist.

Wir wissen, dass uns die Zeit davonläuft.

Wir wissen, dass der Klimanotstand längst da ist.

2018 war das wärmste Jahr seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen. Und 2019 wird wohl ein weiteres Jahr der Extreme. Die Folgen sind deutlich sichtbare Auswirkungen der Klimakrise: Dürre, Waldbrände, Hochwässer Und Stürme. Menschen verlieren ihre Heimat. Menschen verlieren ihr Leben. Durch Zyklone in Mozambique, durch Waldbrände in Kalifornien, durch Dürrekatastrophen in vielen Teilen der Welt. Auch bei uns in Europa.

Wir wissen, dass die Klimakrise die weltweite Wirtschaftsentwicklung beeinträchtigt, dass sie Landwirtschaft, Tourismus, Wasser- und Energieversorgung bedroht.

Und damit letztlich Frieden, Sicherheit, sozialen Zusammenhalt und Wohlstand von uns allen.

Wir wissen all das. Was ist also zu tun?

Wir müssen JETZT die Trendwende bei den Treibhausgasemissionen einleiten. Wir müssen unser Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmodell so umbauen, dass es netto ohne CO2-Emissionen funktioniert. Das müssen wir bis 2050 schaffen.

Ich habe im Vorfeld der wichtigen Klimakonferenz Cop 24 in Polen mit europäischen Staatsoberhäuptern eine Klimainitiative gestartet. Ich setze diese Initiative jetzt fort, mit dem Ziel, den UNO-Klima-Aktionsgipfel von António Guterres im September zu unterstützen und Druck aufzubauen für die notwendigen weitreichenden Maßnahmen, die alle Staaten jetzt setzen müssen.

Ich bedanke mich an dieser Stelle besonders bei den heute hier anwesenden Staatsoberhäuptern von Ungarn, Janos Ader, von Lettland, Raimonds Vejonis, von Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, und Nepal, Nanda Bahadur Pun, für die Unterstützung der Initiative. Viele weitere Staats- und Regierungschefs sind bereits an Bord.

Meine Damen und Herren!

Der heutige Austrian World Summit soll vor allem eines bewirken: wir wollen Entscheidungsträger motivieren, mehr zu tun als bisher und wir wollen zeigen, wie das funktioniert.

Heute geht es um ganz konkrete Lösungen. Es geht um Best-Practice-Beispiele.

Es geht um "action and ambition".

 Wir tragen eine historische Verantwortung für das Leben unserer und zukünftiger Generationen.

 Was wir heute tun, nützt uns, unseren Kindern und Enkelkindern. Und was wir heute nicht tun, schadet uns, unseren Kindern und Enkelkindern.

Es geht nicht nur um Lebensqualität, es geht um viel mehr. Es geht um alles.
